Children's Art Competition Puts Barnardo's In the Picture Posted on 18 June 2007 | Tags: Charity, Press A special presentation to pupils from Elmsley Primary School, Swadlincote has marked the start of a local company's two year commitment to raise money for Barnardo's children's charity and the work they do in the South Derbyshire area. Seven local children aged between two and 11 years, all received certificates and prizes from leading cleaning products company, AF International Ltd, after winning a competition to have their drawings featured in the Barnardo's Stepping Forward Project leaflet. The Stepping Forward project is based in Swadlincote and is just one of the 50 services run by Barnardo's in the Midlands. They provide a range of support to local families to help them address concerns raised over the care of their children, the aim being to keep families together. Support includes learning how to manage behaviour, discipline, routines and healthy lifestyles, as well as learning about play and building relationships. Karen Harrison, Marketing Manager at AF International Ltd, who recently did a tandem skydive to raise £1,000 for Barnardo's, said: 'We wanted to support a local charity and the community. Providing prizes for the art competition is an ideal way to officially launch our support for Barnardo's. I don't think I'll be repeating my skydive experience, I was absolutely terrified! But we do have lots of really fun things planned, including staff competitions and sponsorship activities, providing a computer that families can use at the Barnardo's Swadlincote centre and donating two pence for every product sold in the UK bearing Barnardo's logo.' The centre at Midway, Swadlincote was initially set up 17 years ago to provide a variety of support to local families but have recently expanded, with workers now operating in communities throughout South Derbyshire and South Derbyshire Dales. Barnardo's also run two projects based at Belper and Osmaston, Derby which provide a range of support services and activities for children and families across the county.
